Northwest Creative Arts Center started in 1999 as a result of the passion of Judy Roesch for the visual arts and working with people who have disabilities. While working with adults who have developmental disabilities, she realized that there were no art programs that were accessible to people who have physical, intellectual, or emotional disabilities in Pierce County. People who have disabilities were not able to use the art resources that did exist because they lacked the support and instruction needed to do so. As a result, they were not being given the opportunity to express themselves in a meaningful and creative way. Judy decided to create a program that would meet the needs of any person regardless of their disability and that would be affordable to anyone who was interested in the visual arts. In the process, she also discovered her love for teaching the visual arts.
Northwest Creative Arts Center offers classes that explore all types of art media including but not limited to painting, sculpture, collage, print-making, doll-making, mask-making, and mixed media. Class size is limited so individuals can receive the support and instruction that they need to complete their art. Classes run in 8-week sessions and there is an art exhibit and reception that occurs after each class session so that artists can share their work with the public. Some of the artists choose to sell their work as well.
Scholarships are available through the Bill Denn Memorial Art Fund. Otherwise, there is a small fee for the 8-week sessions.
The creative energy produced by these classes is amazing. Judy has learned so much through the students she teaches. Judy says, "It is a joy to give people a means to express themselves creatively without any limitations and to be able to see themselves as talented artists."
